Who's building this

American Cattle Union is built by Cosimo Roby, based in Columbia, Tennessee.

I'm not a cattle producer. I don't run cattle, I don't own ground, and I've never sold a bull. I'm a software builder who kept hearing the same thing from people who do: that selling registered seedstock means a sale barn taking a cut of an animal it can't price properly, or a classified ad that reaches nobody in particular.

So this isn't a producer's site and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a tool built for producers, by someone who has to ask them how it should work — which is why I'd rather show you something half-finished and be told it's wrong than guess and ship it.

What it's for

Roughly nine in ten bulls sell within a hundred miles of the operation that raised them. A national index is the wrong shape for that. The point here is narrower and more useful: every registered operation within driving distance, in one place, with what's actually available right now.

That starts in Middle Tennessee — the counties within about a hundred miles of Columbia. It's where I am, so it's where I can drive out, meet people, photograph cattle and enter listings myself rather than asking a producer to fill in a web form he has no reason to trust yet.

Where it actually is

Early. There's no large membership to point at and I'm not going to invent one. If you're reading this in the first months, you're looking at something being built in the open, and the honest description of the marketplace is on the marketplace page itself.
